RESIST: An Engendered Art Protest comes to Mumbai, May 17-21, 2013.

RESIST, the traveling exhibition that started in New Delhi in February and subsequently traveled to Chennai has arrived in Mumbai. The multi-media, multi-dimensional exhibition incorporating art, installation, fashion, performances and music has been a smashing success, garnering media attention wherever it has gone. Conceptualized by Engendered, based in New York and New Delhi, the exhibition is an art protest against sexual violence.

I contributed a canvas for the Wall of Solidarity, which invited artists to contribute a 12 x 12 canvas in support of the cause. See the poster below for more information with images from the opening reception.

EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Group Exhibition, “Touched by Bhupen” at Galerie Mirchandani & Steinruecke and Max Mueller Bhavan, opens Dec 2013.

Touched by Bhupen

This December, I am creating a large 72in x 72in painting for a group show honoring the 10 Year Anniversary of one of my favorite artists, Bhupen Khakar. Khakar’s uncompromising vision reflected in paintings, which combined the figure and the landscape in deeply personal vignettes about the city, village life, and his own sexuality. Generations of artists have been influenced by his bold vision.

Artists in the exhibition include Atul Dodiya, Sudhir Patwardhan, Nilima Sheikh, Gieve Patel, Shilpa Gupta, Varunika Saraf & many others.

More details TBA.

Chameleon Art Projects brings the second alternative art space exhibition in Mumbai, at Cocoon Fine Rugs, a space which displays contemporary carpets in a 4,000-sqft minimalistic space. These works will be exhibited and incorporated within the existing interiors.

Art in Alternative Spaces has been an important channel to give an entirely new approach to the works ideally shown in galleries, essentially known as “White Cube” spaces. Spaces to show art in its entirety must have a neutral environment, which is why art galleries are architectural spaces with white walls, which can be molded to the requirement of the artwork displayed. With Alternative Spaces, the displayed art responds differently with the surrounding, and brings about a whole new meaning with the way it reacts with the audience .

OUT / OFF
“Out of the gallery and off the walls.

This exhibition exhibits five artists whose works have been selected specifically to compliment the space. Each artist comes from a specific practice, however there is an element in each work that justifies them to each other, and with the space.
