Sharmistha Ray, Interview with Bharti Kher, ‘We just made art everyday,’ The Economic Times, April 11, 2010
Artist Bharti Kher is a phenomenon but you have to see beyond the art market buzz, she insists. After her iconic art work of a life-size dying elephant covered in bindis, The skin speaks a language not its own (2006), sold for the equivalent of 7 crores at the Contemporary Art Evening Sale at Sotheby’s in June 2010, she became the first Indian contemporary female artist to enter into the big numbers league of Anish Kapoor, Raqib Shaw and Subodh Gupta. Kher speaks candidly to ET about her creative and personal journey, the obstacles she’s overcome and why it’s important for people to understand the art behind the numbers.
